This is the first of two courses required for deck officers operating in polar waters as defined in the Polar Code. The content of the course is in accordance with STCW Section V/4, table A-V/4-1.
A trainee successfully completing this course will gain the ability to contribute to safe operation of vessels operating in polar waters, apply safe working practices, respond to emergencies, ensure compliance with pollution prevention requirements and prevent environmental hazards: all in accordance with legislative requirements.
The course lasts for 34 hours, including 18 hours e-learning. Target participants are masters, chief-mates and officers in charge of navigation watch on ships operating in polar waters.
Maximum number of participants are 6.

Masters and chief mates must also have the Advanced Course. It is recommended to take the two courses in combination.
