The Sun Enterprise Workgroup Server Maintenance course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to configure, maintain, and troubleshoot the Sun Enterprise 250, Sun Enterprise 450, Sun Enterprise 220R, and Sun Enterprise 420R servers.

Students study the architecture and hardware components of these servers: practice locating, removing, and replacing all field-replaceable units (FRUs): and use a variety of diagnostic tools to troubleshoot failed system components.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
• Understand basic architecture for the Sun Enterprise 250, Sun Enterprise 450, Sun Enterprise 220R, and Sun Enterprise 420R servers.
• Troubleshoot the servers to the FRU level.
• Locate, remove, and replace server FRUs.
• Perform Solaris Operating Environment (Solaris OE) and UNIX commands necessary for halting, booting, and maintaining a server.
• Navigate the OpenBoot PROM (OBP).
• Retrieve and modify nonvolatile random-access memory (NVRAM) contents.
• Retrieve power-on self-test (POST) reports and interpret their results.

Content:
Introducing the Sun Enterprise Servers

• Describe the main roles, features, and specifications of the Sun Enterprise 250, Sun Enterprise 450, Sun Enterprise 220R, and Sun Enterprise 420R servers.
• Define what the Sun Enterprise servers´ reliability, availability, serviceability, and scalability (RASS) feature set provides to our customers.
• Describe the tools and applications used to monitor and maintain Sun Enterprise servers.

The Sun Enterprise Server Architecture

• Explain the general architecture and hardware specifications for Sun Enterprise 250, Sun Enterprise 450, Sun Enterprise 220R, and Sun Enterprise 420R servers.
• Describe the basic system chassis designs and configurations of the Sun Enterprise servers.
• Identify and locate all FRUs in the Sun Enterprise servers.
• Remove and replace all FRUs in the Sun Enterprise servers.
• Identify the different system and central processing unit (CPU) boards used in Sun Enterprise servers.
• Identify each input/output (I/O) board type and the peripheral devices they support.
• Remove and replace a CPU module.

The Sun Enterprise Server Bus Architecture

• Describe the purpose, function, and characteristics of the UPA bus.
• Describe the purpose, function, and characteristics of the PCI bus.
• Describe the purpose, function, and characteristics of the SCSI bus.
• Describe the purpose and function of the Fiber Channel interface.

The POST Process

• Describe the POST process.
• Identify any system failures from results presented by POST.
• Display POST output on an American standard code for information interchange (ASCII) display device.

The OBP and NVRAM

• Describe the purpose and function of the OBP.
• Upgrade or modify OBP contents with flash programming.
• Use the OBP test commands.
• Display the device tree and view and modify individual device tree nodes.
• Define and edit the NVRAM configuration parameters.

Internal Disk Subsystems

• Describe the internal disk interfaces and addressing used for each Sun Enterprise server.
• Properly configure internal disks in the systems.
• Identify a failed disk using standard Solaris OE addressing.

Solaris OS Support Utilities

• Determine how the Solaris OS references system components.
• Identify the steps required to configure devices in a Solaris OS.
• Identify Solaris OS support utilities.
• Analyze output from various Solaris OE support utilities.
• Display and modify system configuration parameters using the eeprom command.

SunVTS Software System Diagnostics

• Select, setup, and run Sun Validation Test Suite (SunVTS) diagnostic tests.
• Run SunVTS over a network.
• Run SunVTS in serial (TTY) mode without a frame buffer.
• Analyze SunVTS test results.

Troubleshooting Sun Enterprise Servers

• Use an organized, total-system approach for fault analysis and diagnosis.
• Identify available resources used to solve technical problems.
• Identify concurrent maintenance strategies when performing maintenance activities on Sun Enterprise servers.
• Use the fault analysis Worksheet to gather and document facts.
• Isolate common faults on Sun Enterprise servers.

Sun Microsystems
